A Holden young lion has won the 2022 VALO Adelaide 500, with 20-year-old Broc Feeney giving crowds a glimpse of what is set to come at future Adelaide Supercars events.
Saturday’s race winner Chaz Mostert again secured a Holden 1-2 finish for the brand on the day it was farewelled from the sport, with the Walkinshaw Andretti United driver unable to seriously challenge the Red Bull Ampol Racing winner.
After the race win, the crowd was treated to a spectacular celebration from 2022 Supercars champion Shane van Gisbergen, also from Red Bull Ampol Racing, who did multiple burnouts around the circuit including one in which he got out of the car, grabbed his winner’s trophy on display at the start/finish line, and drove off for more burnouts.
Hundreds of race fans then piled into pit straight to cheer the podium trophy presentation in which Feeney donned the traditional winner’s wreath and van Gisbergen was officially handed his trophy.
Ford took the early spoils of the day when Cameron Waters qualified fastest for Monster Energy Racing, then Anton de Pasquale took pole position for Shell V-Power Racing in the Top Ten Shootout.
But a safety car caused when Jake Kostecki crashed his Tradie Racing mustang into Turn 8 took its toll, and Feeney was able to make a pass to take the lead of the race on Lap 24.
He survived another safety car restart – also caused by a crash at Turn 8, this time Brad Jones Racing driver Bryce Fullwood – and was never seriously challenged.
It was Feeney’s first race win in Supercars.
Race fans again were treated to summer sunshine around the circuit on the last day of the four-day event.
Spectators streamed through the entry gates from the moment they opened to make the most of their final day at the event, taking their positions in the grandstands and along the fence lines early to watch the Drivers’ Parade and support category races.
The event was farewelled with thousands of fans making their way to the Concert Oval to see the traditional Sunday night concert, headlined by The Killers.
